As a child growing up in Christchurch, The Games Affair was a big thrill for me.
My family had a sky blue Holden Kingswood stationwagon just like the one seen in Episode 1.
I was at the opening ceremony and at the big race day when Dick Tayler won his race.
The Canterbury Earthquake has really put Christchurch on the map. For me, it's always been the City of My Heart, the place where most of my dreams are still set.

How can I see the other episodes? I would like to see them all again.

This aired 22 Feb to 29 Mar 1975 (6 parts), a year after the Games themselves took place.

I remember bits from the later episodes:

* the kids are exposed to a gas (helium?) and speak with high-pitched squeaky voices
* the villains lair being an old hut in the woods
* in the final episode, Manual gets stabbed and deflates like a balloon!

A DVD release please!!

Very interesting, it was indeed broadcast on ABC in August 1977 -- and I thought I'd never see it again ...!

This series was shown here in Australia in late 1977. I was 11 at the time. I didn't pay much attention to the plot, but I remember the rather gruesome demise of two of the villains at the end, especially the one who copped the syringe and appeared to turn into a statue. I haven't seen it since, but I would like to watch in right through. It's not on YouTube - yet.

Exactly what Keith said!
Only found out the name of the series because of the Prime series looking back at the history of TV in NZ.

I saw this series as a kid, and ever since I've been trying to find out the name of it. Thanks so much! As per just about everyone else on this board, I would like to extend a plea for the series to come back, even as a DVD set or whatever. It was so totally and delightfully out of there that even today I think it'd be worthwhile a new generation seeing it.

So glad to see this again! I grew up in Chch and it was really fascinating and increasingly spooky to see the action all unfold in very familiar territory. I sort of hoped to see, and then wished I didn't see any real live action for myself - it was all too close to home.
Near the end I think there was some kind of monster / gorilla and shattering man chasing the kids around the stadium - all while races and announcements were going on!
Could we see more please?

I remember this show well. it's great to see it again after all these years. Any chance of seeing the rest of the series?

Classic stuff! Great to see the jumping sheep after all those years. I seem to recall later scenes with a super fast table tennis player, and that the special "athletes" would break like terracotta figures. Christchurch in the 70s, more please :-)

Great to see this again. I do however recall that as a 7-year old it scared the hell out of me (the series starts to get very macabre as it goes on).
Not credited (but definitely deserving of being so) is the NZ composer Ross Harris who created the electronic music for the series on (I believe) an EMS Synthi analogue synthesizer. The piece accompanying the bike ride through Hagley Park (first episode, part two, 1' 37") is utterly charming.
