My Gr8 gr8 gr8 grand daddy"Dutch Harry"...Lithuanian and he spoke "DOUBLE DUTCH" was a STEERSMAN in 1840,he was the Harpooner and made the whale "FAST" to the boat .After the whale tired he swapped places to the steering oar at the rear and the HEADMAN gave the killing harpoon thrust.
I am proud of my heritage after all that was their way of life.
Good to see the Southern Right Whale population increasing again as this was most certainly THE WHALE that "Dutch Harry" killed most often from the shores of Johnny Jones Karitane shore based whaling station.
"Dutch Harry" married a Wahine from Karitane and trough her lineage i (maybe)
have connection to Paikea the "WHALE RIDER" .
SRW are the whales featured in the movie of that name,Truly a BEAUTIFUL animal.
I hope they do survive.
