HTML5 Video Player Beta Programme

HTML5 is the newest way to make websites. It's so new that not everybody can see HTML5 web pages just yet. Among other things HTML5 is an alternative to using Adobe Flash to play videos.

Incompatible browser

Unfortunately, your browser isn't compatible with the HTML5 video technology that we use.

Compatible Browsers

Currently we support browsers that understand both the video tag in HTML5 and the h.264 video codec. These include:

If you are using a supported browser, you can choose to use the HTML5 player instead of our regular Flash player. This is especially handy for Apple devices that can't see things made with Flash, but it's also pretty neat for desktop browsers too.

Apple devices (iPhone, iPod and iPad) and Android devices are also supported. These devices are automatically opted-in and do not need to do anything further. Not all videos on the site will work with Apple devices. Here's the full (and growing) list of Apple-ready clips.

We will be expanding our support for browsers and video player features in an on-going fashion. Please contact us if you have feedback or suggestions regarding this programme.

If you'd like to know more about NZ On Screen and how we're approaching HTML5 make sure to read our post about the programme in the ScreenTalk messageboard.

Please Note

  • If you are visiting our site with a compatible browser you'll see an option to turn HTML5 player on or off each time you watch a video. The button is just below and to the right of the player. Feel free to switch it around and spot the difference.
  • We aren't yet offering an HTML5 embeddable player. The embedded player will remain in Flash format for now.
