David Rittey has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Canterbury University, and studied film at the Victorian College of Arts. His first short film Closer - the story of a deaf teenager dealing with his sister’s death — won a NZ Screen Best Short Award in 2005, and was selected for competition at Cannes. Follow-up We the Living (starring Emily Barclay) was released in 2006. Rittey is based in Australia, where he directs commercials.
I think it's actually important to engage the viewer's mind. I think a lot of typical Hollywood films don't require a lot of thought from the viewer, whereas I'm interested in films where the viewer has to participate and use their mind and piece things together.
