James Blick packed in an Auckland solicitor’s job to make films. His debut, relationship drama Us, was nominated for best short film and script at the NZ Screen Awards, with Alison Bruce taking best actor. Follow-up Roof Rattling was invited to festivals in France, Japan and the US. Married to a Spaniard, Blick now divides his time between Madrid and Auckland, and juggles journalism, commercials and developing a feature film.
The exhilarating social fluidity is also disorientating, particularly for an Anglo-Saxon looking for finite rules. I do my best to integrate. Spaniards are usually late and so, invariably on time, I’ll wait around the corner for five minutes so as not to seem pedantic.
– James Blick from Madrid, in a 2011 Metro article
