20-year-old theatre actor Kelly Johnson found fame as the larrikin car thief in Goodbye Pork Pie, the first Kiwi blockbuster. Johnson reunited with director Geoff Murphy three years later for Utu. In between he starred as a farmer visiting the city in Carry Me Back, and appeared in Bad Blood. Since then, the Whangarei lawyer has been harder to spot: he starred in Martin Blyth's short Queen Street, co-scripted short film Sink or Swim, and has guested on Shortland Street and Maddigan's Quest.
Any comedy has to have a basis of truth ... when things are over the top it's usually because people are trying to be funny for the sake of being funny.
– Kelly Johnson
