Looking for a particular short film title

Does anyone know of an old NZ short film about a man convicted of murdering his wife, but who get's released from Mt Eden Prison on a technicality because of a law change which wasn't finalised until after a parlimentary luch break, so for 1hour it was not illegal to murder. He then went on to grow mushrooms underground queen street getting access via a telecom manhole cover because it was a lifetime dream of his cell mate.  There is also another character who steels an ARC bus and takes passengers to wherever they want around town to collect the fares for himself.

It is a comedy genre short film.

What was it's title?

Yes! Managed to track this down. The film is called Lawful Excuse, written by Barry Crump and directed by a Roger Donaldson/Ian Mune combo. It was part of a series called Winners and Losers. We're trying to clear the series for the site at the moment.

It's actually described in Ian Mune's (fascinatingly good) recently published autobiography (which I have been reading while on holiday and recognised your description!).

Cheers - yeah that's the one.  I remember looking at it (as part of high school english I think) back in the late 80's.  Would be great to see it again.

Has the series been cleared yet?  If not, any idea when?

It hasn't yet - but it's one we are working hard on - for the whole Winners and Losers series in fact. Keep checking :)
