John Hanlon - his generation's Dave Dobbyn

Hi, good folks at NZ on Screen

I've got a special request for you. How about finding as much John Hanlon as is available for the site. He was his generation's Dave Dobbyn in the mid-'70s before vanishing just before disco hit.

He won two consecutive APRA Silver Scrolls, won songwriter of the year and album of the year gongs at the RATA awards (the predecessor of RIANZ) and released three LPs, containing such hits as "Lovely Lady", "Damn the Dam" and "Apple Wine".

After an absence of 30-odd years he recently revived his music career but has found the business an altogether different beast to the one he left behind for a job in advertising in Australia. Here's a great recent post on his web site - http://www.johnhanlon.com.au/blog/i-used-to-be-john-hanlon/.

Having a NZ on Screen without any John Hanlon is akin to having a NZ on Screen without....well, John Hanlon.

I wish you luck.

Thanks Glen, excellent suggestion!  We'll have a talk to the TVNZ Archive and see what John Hanlon material might be available to us...was a big Damn the Dam fan myself!

Hi Glen - while we source Damn the Dam (power to the piwakawaka!) you can enjoy some John Hanlon on NZ On Screen: the (epic) promo to Off the Edge is scored to Hanlon's 'Higher Trails' www.nzonscreen.com/title/off-the-edge-1976

Brilliant. Thanks, Paul. There must also be some 'Studio One' footage of John singing "Lovely Lady" on that show in 1974. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Glen - we're talking to the TVNZ Archive about Lovely Lady and Damn the Dam now...if the Studio One material still exists, it should come up in that search.

We've found the Studio One New Faces episode with 'Lovely Lady' in it, and we are just completing some final artist clearance work on it. And we've also found an environmental campaign that has 'I Care' in it. Both will be coming soon. No sign of 'Damn the Dam' so far...

Thanks Glen and Irene for helping to give John the recognition he deserves. I still think he is one of the greatest talents to ever come out of this beautiful country of ours (and of course Glen).  He also has such a generous spirit and passion for life.  I have lots of old albums and all 3 of his new ones and would dearly love to see some of the old film clips.  Wishing John all the best with the release of his wonderful book which is being launched in NZ this weekend.

Hi Lois - we have now cleared and sourced the episode of Studio One with John singing 'Lovely Lady', and a fragment of 'I Care'. They'll be on the site soon - we're just writing them up...

It's great to see John will be featured here on NZOS. I was a young recording engineer at Mascot Studios when I mixed Damn the Dam, Lovely Lady, Knowing and several other 45's he released early 70's.  It's not well known that the iconic Damn the Dam started out as an AHI promotion for 'Pink Bats' - to the extent it was mailed out - free - on disc- to the residents of Hamilton! I can only echo a reviewer who recently commented "It is quite unbelievable that such a fine songwriter as John was completely overlooked when the APRA Top 100 songs was compiled. He should easily have had at least two songs in the list, such is his contribution to New Zealand music." Yes, a disgrace it certainly was and hopefully will be corrected in future editions.

Hi again Folks - well not so good news to report. The Studio One episode with 'Lovely Lady' in it that we have sourced is a later episode from the series so it is only a 30-second excerpt in a finalists package. There must have been an earlier episode with the full performance, but the TVNZ Archive can't find it, so it must have been lost somewhere along the line. What a shame. We have also found a little bit of 'I Care' from an ecology campaign, but it is really just a fragment. And it seems there is definitely nothing of 'Damn the Dam.' Anyway, we'll put what we have on the site soon and at least we will have a little of John, but just not much of him kept unfortunately.

Such a shame, that there is little footage of John. Thanks for trying so hard to track it down.  John definitely deserves the recognition, I think many of his songs were years ahead of their time..and he is an exceptional writer, singer and person..
