Acclaimed hip hop producer Darryl Thompson (DLT) is thought to be the first person to 'scratch' on a locally produced record. Brought up in Maraenui in Napier, DLT was inspired by an article about rap and breakdancing in Life magazine when he was 16. He was a founding member of influential New Zealand hip hop group Upper Hutt Posse, and also founded Dam Native. In 1996, DLT released the hit single 'Chains', which kick-started the solo career of Supergroove star Che Fu, who featured on vocals.
