Synopsis

Special Investigators is an observational documentary series which follows agents from government safety enforcement agencies, as they search for the causes of mishaps at sea, plane crashes and other fatal incidents. In this excerpt from the 2006 series a Maritime New Zealand investigator interviews two Bay of Plenty teenagers who survived a tragic fishing trip. Their friend drowned after the runabout they were all passengers in failed to get over the breakers at Maraetai Bay. The interviews are mixed with recreations and accident scene archive footage.
