Synopsis

In this unexpurgated (and until-now unscreened) interview, Keith Quinn talks to TP 'Terry' McLean, who Quinn has called “the best rugby writer we have ever produced”. The late author and NZ Herald sports editor reminisces widely, though All Blacks are often on the menu: the “God-like figure” of George Nepia (who McLean wrote a book with), “audacious, thoughtful, cunning, chess player” Bob Scott, and Colin Meads, who McLean is candid in his opinion of. Quinn quizzes McLean on his beginnings, favourite sporting memories, and all-time favourite All Black Captain.

I read 'TP' the life and times of Sir Terry Mclean over the summer oif2010/2011. Superbly written. Viewing these and listening to a voice that was so typical of the NZ accent of the 50's and 60's when I grew up, together with the manners and the presentation of the man suggests that we have as a nation lost a speaking style, and sadly it has gone forever. Keith Quinn this is a valuable contribution to NZ film footage. Congratulations for ferreting out TP before he left us.

This is brilliant stuff. Classic TPM. I don't recall ever seeing this on TVNZ at the time, so it was great to view it now.

Quotes

Writing is an exercise fundamentally in boredom. You are confronted with the stupidities of your own brain.
(‘Tiny’ Richard White) said ‘You don’t break a man’s arm in a test match’. I agree.
... none of these reporters appears to write a piece until he has been told by the captain and the manager of each team what has gone on in the play. In my time as soon as the last whistle sounded we used to peel off the tops of our typewriters and stat belting ... and some hours later we’d come to the surface.
