Annie Whittle: Renaissance woman...

Interview – 2010

Annie Whittle has played it serious, silly and musical. The award-winning singer and actor has featured on a range of homegrown TV shows including A Week of It, Heartland, and Shortland Street. She has also graced the silver screen, starring in movie Trial Run and short film The Makutu on Mrs Jones, and acting in 2005 hit The World’s Fastest Indian.

In this ScreenTalk, Whittle talks about:

  • Having fun playing "token bag ladies and tarts" on pioneering Kiwi comedy show A Week of It
  • How a racy Week of It skit caused Air New Zealand to change its in-flight safety demonstrations
  • Training with runner Allison Roe so she could play the lead role in thriller Trial Run
  • Loving her character Barb Heywood's "deliciously, wonderfully mad" storylines, on Shortland Street
  • How people on the street would confuse her with Barb
  • Being on her best behaviour with star Anthony Hopkins on the set of The World’s Fastest Indian
  • Feeling superfluous as a guest character on Outrageous Fortune
  • Having to reign in her personality for TV movie Piece of My Heart
  • Struggling with a lack of self-confidence, and learning from it

...the scriptwriters fed my character such deliciously, wonderfully mad storylines. She was a joy to play. She was completely off the wall that character, and I loved her.
