Polly Gillespie - Funny As Interview

Funny As Interviews – 2019

Polly Gillespie is a veteran radio personality who helmed ZM's breakfast show for over 20 years, with her then husband Grant Kereama. In this Funny As interview, she talks about a wide range of subjects, including:

  • Her lifelong love of performing — when she was four she held a puppet show for 50 people
  • Deciding to work in radio, after a colleague at Social Welfare told her she had a good voice
  • Learning to speak with a clipped English accent at Radio New Zealand
  • Being "transfixed" by Karyn Hay speaking with an unashamedly Kiwi accent on Radio with Pictures
  • Realising that working in television (Celebrity Squares, narrating for RTR Countdown) was not for her — "it's a job to be beautiful and thin and be on TV, and that was never going to be me"
This interview was recorded for 2019 TV series Funny As: The Story of New Zealand Comedy. All audiovisual content is copyright to Augusto, and may not be reproduced. Publication of Funny As extended interviews made possible with funding from the NZ Lotteries Grants Board.
