Roseanne Liang - Funny As Interview

Funny As Interviews – 2019

Chinese-Kiwi writer/director Roseanne Liang has proven her mettle across many genres. In this Funny As interview, she talks about how film and TV connect people, seeing more Asians on screen and more, including:

  • Having her first feature film My Wedding and Other Secrets "drop into my lap"
  • Hitting a creative wall for nearly three years after having two children — "I couldn't write, I couldn't come up with new ideas"
  • Making comical web series Flat3 with little money, but thriving on having creative control
  • How action short film Do No Harm "completely changed my life" when it premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival (When this interview was done she was developing a feature-length version)
  • How being an "outsider" (Chinese, born in New Zealand) makes her work unique — "It takes a person outside of culture to really see it for what it is"
This interview was recorded for 2019 TV series Funny As: The Story of New Zealand Comedy. All audiovisual content is copyright to Augusto, and may not be reproduced. Publication of Funny As extended interviews made possible with funding from the NZ Lotteries Grants Board.
