This final edition of the 1992 celebration of New Zealand Rugby runs from grand slam success to the cusp of the professional era. But in-between, rugby and politics combusted. When the Springboks, representing apartheid South Africa, toured NZ in 1981, barbed wire, flour bombs and riot police were match fixtures. Kiwis were either for or against. The tour’s aftermath and public disillusionment with the sport found relief in 1987, when the All Blacks won the first Rugby World Cup; three undefeated years followed. Three NZRFU centennial tests close the series.

The second episode of this 1992 celebration of New Zealand rugby looks at the period from 1925 - 1956, as depression and war affected the national game. Scrum rules changed — outlawing the wing forward position, pioneered by the Kiwis — and NZ found itself chasing the pack: the no-longer-invincible All Blacks regularly came out losers playing against South Africa. The Springbok was finally felled in a series by the Kiwis in 1956 (played at home in front of huge, manic crowds). All Black Peter Jones famously summed it up the achievement post match: “I’m absolutely buggered”. 

This National Film Unit documentary follows the British Lions 1959 rugby tour to New Zealand. Prior to live televised sports coverage, match highlights were rushed onto cinema screens; NFU tour coverage was later edited into this feature length doco. On the field the series was won by the All Blacks 3-1, including the first test where Don Clarke famously kicked six penalties to beat the Lions’ four tries. Off the field, the Lions visited farms and resorts, drove trout and tried Māori song and dance with guide Rangi. A star back for the Lions was Peter Jackson. 

This episode of community-made show Open Door focuses on Chinese New Zealanders who deal with two identities: the Chinese values of their parents, and the country they live in. Andrew Young rebelled against the hard-working  ways of his parents, but gained a new perspective after travelling to China and witnessing the level of poverty. Wong Liu Shueng recalls her "two-tiered" childhood jumping between languages, but wishes she hadn't kept her Chinese culture hidden. The people interviewed have embraced the positive aspects of experiencing two different cultures.

After being spotted performing for tourists in Rotorua, 11-year-old Temuera Morrison was given his very first starring role in this British TV series, shot downunder by expat Kiwi director Michael Forlong. In this clip, Rangi (Morrison) and co have adventures with sharks, crayfish and a stranded sheep near their remote South Island farm. Meanwhile two robbers (Ian Mune and Michael Woolf) sneak into the house. The scene is set for crims and and children to chase each other all the way to Rotorua. The series was seen in New Zealand cinemas in a shortened movie version.

Featuring the voice talents of Lucy Lawless, Temuera Morrison and Rhys Darby, this animated feature follows a fictional creature on the run from a life of servitude on the farm. After learning that his fellow thoriphants used to stand upright, Mosley sets out to discover the secrets of his species. In the accompanying making of clip, American writer/director Kirby Atkins explains how he used recordings of his then seven-year-old daughter in the film. Made by Kiwi animation company Huhu Studios, Mosley marks the first official co-production between China and New Zealand.

This 'M.E'. episode looks into the lives of people suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Despite 'normal' outward appearances syndrome sufferers are affected by debilitating exhaustion and 'brain fog', and can face long-term bed-ridden isolation, job loss, and skepticism about the reality of their illness.

It features frank and revealing interviews with gamblers, as well as support information. The doco describes gambling as a “secret disease” that affects all types of people across all socio-economic groups. It explains that there are “action gamblers”, who are attracted to the risk and thrill, and “escape gamblers”, who gamble to escape some form of emotional pain.

Open Door is a community-based TV series where groups or individuals make a documentary about an issue that concerns them. This episode on Autism features interviews with parents of young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The parents talk about how their children were diagnosed, how best to help them, how to be fair to their siblings, working with the school system, and dealing with public attitudes to Autism. There are currently around 40,000 New Zealanders diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This episode is about the Mental Health Foundation youth group Vibe, which supports young people with mental illness. The doco features Vibe co-ordinators, and also young people who have a mental illness. Craig Harvey, who has bi-polar disorder, and Wallace Stevenson, who has schizophrenia, talk frankly about their conditions and the importance of support from groups like Vibe, as well as family and friends.
