This documentary tells the story of the legendary Flying Nun music label up to its 21st birthday. The label became associated with the 'Dunedin Sound': a catch-all term for a sprawl of DIY, post-punk, warped, jangly guitar-pop. The Guardian: "[it's] as if being on the other side of the world meant the music was played upside down". Features interviews with founder Roger Shepherd and many key players, the spats and the glory. The label's influence on the US indie scene is noted, and Pavement's Stephen Malkmus covers The Verlaines' 'Death and the Maiden'.
The Datsuns’ origins are in Trinket – a high school band in formed in Cambridge in 1997. They renamed themselves in 2000 and made an immediate impression in Britain – hailed by the English music press and recording sessions for John Peel’s BBC radio show. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin produced their second album and Lars Ulrich of Metallica has also praised them. Dolf de Borst says of their music, “It can be too light for people into heavy metal, and too heavy for people into straight garage - we purposefully make it so it doesn't fit into one place”.
Once labelled by the legendary British radio DJ John Peel as "one of the 10 best bands in the world you've never heard of", HDU emerged from Dunedin in 1994. They outgrew the confines of their southern base and moved to Auckland where word of the band's charged live performances spread. Their demos earned them a cult following on student radio and a deal with Flying Nun. The "psychedelic punk" rockers have released three albums, including 2008's Metamathics.

New Zealand's answer to Inspector Morse, the show was conceived by Marion McLeod, and scripted by Donna Malane and Ken Duncum. Eleven episodes of the Gibson Group series were made, following on from introductory tele-features Death in Paradise and Sins of the Father. Julian Dickon’s place in New Zealand screen history would be secure thanks to just one show — groundbreaking 70s drama series Pukemanu, which he created. Dickon also wrote a number of early plays for television, and went on to write drama, documentary and children’s show Sea Urchins. Dickon passed away on 3 April 2015.
