George Lowe - Everest Enabler

Hastings-born George Lowe was instrumental in setting up the final Everest camp 300 metres below the summit on Sir Edmund Hillary's 1953 Everest conquest, and for forging the route up Lhotse Face. In this Spotlight collection on Lowe, he and Sir Ed discuss their achievements (they were the only Kiwis on the Brit expedition) in Hillary Returns. Adventure films directed by Lowe — The Conquest of Everest and Antarctic Crossing — were Oscar-nominated in the 1950s, making Lowe an unheralded NZ screen industry figure. The last surviving member of Hillary’s 1953 Everest crew, Lowe died on 20 March 2013.
