McPhail & Gadsby

Television, 1980–1987, 1998

After turning "Jeez Wayne" into a national catchphrase on their pioneering Kiwi comedy series A Week of It, David McPhail and Jon Gadsby (plus third writer AK Grant) began work on the country's longest-running sketch show. McPhail & Gadsby aired on TVNZ for seven seasons across the 1980s — plus a reprise in 1997 and 1998. After a controversial debut season in which each episode concentrated on a specific theme (including religion and sex), the show settled into a steady diet of political satire, spoofs and impersonations of public figures — including McPhail's beloved caricature of Prime Minister Robert 'Piggy' Muldoon.
