They brought a friend of mine and myself to this record company meeting, and Lou (Reed) was there, who was being employed as a songwriter. And he was complaining about how he couldn’t get any of his songs recorded. And they turned out to be 'Heroin' and 'Venus in Furs' and 'Waiting for the Man'.

The (new) record (Music For a New Society) itself, all the personifications in each of the songs are personifications of desolate people, but I think in order to be able to deal with that kind of desolation you have to have a strong core of optimism about yourself.
