Kiwi Mark Piper began his career as an actor, then joined director Roger Donaldson, assisting him on breakthrough feature Sleeping Dogs (1977). Though Piper would later return home to direct episodes of Shortland Street and Mercy Peak, he has since worked largely in Australia. His extensive directorial CV includes many Australian TV staples, including early episodes of All Saints, Blue Heelers, and Home and Away.
I had a background in theatre and business. I knew nothing really about making films. It [Sleeping Dogs] was an amazing experience. It was the beginning of my career in this industry.
– Mark Piper, recalling his screen beginnings
