Daniel Borgman

Director, Writer

Otago University film graduate Daniel Borgman has been based in Denmark since 2005. Borgman has made short films with Lars von Trier’s company Zentropa, and twice been invited to compete at the Cannes Film Festival. After the success of short film Lars and Peter, follow-up Berik — about a deformed Kazakhstani — took the Cannes Critics’ Week prize in 2010. Borgman's first feature, coming of age tale The Weight of Elephants was set and shot in Southland, and premiered at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival in 2013. Since then, he has directed two Danish features; character piece At Elske Pia, and thriller Resin.

Life is hard, but it’s also really beautiful, and film is a great medium in which to render that contrast. Daniel Borgman, in the press kit for his 2009 short film Lars and Peter
