The Tribe

Post-punk band The Tribe formed in Australia in the early 1980s, with New Zealander Jan Preston as their charismatic frontwoman. Spearheaded by Preston and drummer Mina Motu, the band were joined by Guy Le Claire on guitar, Gary Evans on bass and Phil Wichett on keyboards. Preston, a classically trained pianist, had previously performed with Kiwi band Coup D'Etat and theatre troupe Red Mole. In the early 80s, The Tribe released two EPs — War Cry and Even In Russia — and singles 'Angel of The Junkheap' and 'Dreams'. Preston went on to a prolific solo career in Australia as a jazz and blues artist, as well as composing for the screen.
