Reflections on Kitchen Sink

I respond well to assignments. When NZFC sent out an open call for ideas for a series of shorts called 'Bonsai Epics', I thought ... something should happen to a woman alone at home. I thought I'd make a film with no dialogue, or almost none.

The story came fast, like I was watching it, but the ending took another three months. Making this film turned out to be a charmed experience - unusually, freakishly charmed, as I later discovered. Everybody who worked on this film excelled him or her self - it was hugely satisfying. The film showed widely and precipitated some big changes in my life.

We brought Cheryl, a wig maker, over from Sydney and she spent three weeks crocheting human hair and yak hair onto fine netting that we glued to Peter Tait's body. He shaved himself first, head to foot. The soundtrack was built from scratch by John McKay and Chris Burt. Kiri Te Kanawa is in there somewhere. Getting a chance to make a short with a real budget is a luxury I'm grateful for.
