Synopsis

Set in the lead-up to the 1974 Commonwealth Games, The Games Affair was a thriller fantasy series for children. Remembered fondly by many who were kids in the 70s, the story follows three teenagers who battle a miscreant professor who's experimenting on athletes with performance enhancing drugs. The excerpts here from the first episode include some SFX jumping sheep; John Bach as a blonde, grunting villain, and a youthful Elizabeth McRae. It was NZ telly's first children's serial, the first independently produced long-form drama, and an early credit for producer John Barnett.

This aired 22 Feb to 29 Mar 1975 (6 parts), a year after the Games themselves took place.

I remember bits from the later episodes:

* the kids are exposed to a gas (helium?) and speak with high-pitched squeaky voices
* the villains lair being an old hut in the woods
* in the final episode, Manual gets stabbed and deflates like a balloon!

A DVD release please!!

Very interesting, it was indeed broadcast on ABC in August 1977 -- and I thought I'd never see it again ...!

Quotes

The reason why we've all come together for the Games is coz we were all once beaten by Britain ... or something like that.
