Inside Out - Veterans Disabled by War

Television (Full Length Episode) – 1999

This 1999 episode of documentary series Inside Out examines the aftermath of war for those left with lifelong disabilities and mental health struggles from their service. Directed by Peter Coates, the episode touches on a number of wars and battles that have involved New Zealand soldiers, including the Vietnam War, the El Alamein campaign of World War ll, and more recent peacekeeping missions. The consequences of radiation are also explored, with interviews from New Zealanders affected by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and the Christmas Island/Kiritimati nuclear tests of the 1950s.

Having returned to El Alamein on the 50th anniversary of that battle, and seeing the 12,000 crosses there in the dessert, which represents El Alamein — there for the grace of God, go I.
– Alan Johnston
