Inspired by the experience of a friend of the filmmakers, short documentary The Man Outside shines a light on a gap in New Zealand criminal law. A young woman, “May” (voiced by Meg Robinson), recounts living in fear after a former boyfriend began stalking and harassing her at her home. May and her flatmates seek police help after he breaks a trespass notice, but their pleas go unheeded. May’s true story of domestic violence is told by actors in a mix of verbatim storytelling and dramatic re-enactments. In 2025, the New Zealand Government introduced new legislation to combat cases of stalking and harassment.
I'll never forgive myself for leaving that key out...– May's flatmate Viv (Megan Goldsman) recalls her deep regret
