In the immediate aftermath of the March 2019 Christchurch terrorist attack, former Somalian refugee and policy advisor Guled Mire found himself under the glare of TV lights discussing the deep-rooted problem of racism in Aotearoa. This documentary follows reluctant community leader Mire and his group of friends and supporters, leading up to the one year commemoration service in Hagley Park. Much changes in 2020; the coronavirus pandemic dominates national conversation and Mire is set to study overseas. The societal change Mire and the Kiwi Muslim community desire struggles for attention.
In less than 24 hours, I unexpectedly and reluctantly found myself becoming a voice for the Muslim community while still coming to terms with the gravity of the devastation unfolding before me. I soon found myself on one of the biggest breakfast television shows in the country, speaking out about our shameful secret of racism and the conditions that paved the way for such a horrific hate-filled massacre to occur.– Guled Mire on becoming a community voice after the horrific attacks of March 15, 2019, The Spinoff, 31 August 2020
