Back-Up New Zealand is a charitable trust that provides a space for Kiwis with intellectual disabilities to take part in outdoor adventure activity courses. This includes rock climbing, canoeing and scuba diving. Each activity gently pushes participants to trust their abilities and overcome fears. This episode of Open Door follows the Back-Up group leaders and participants over a week long course, the first of it's kind in Aotearoa, seeing brilliant results in the broadening of participants personal growth and confidence. After a big week of emotional and physical challenges, the group take to the air and finish the course on a high.
We actually don’t throw them straight in the deep end. You don’t throw somebody off a really steep cliff without telling them it’s going to happen. You build them up to it, you’ve got processes you actually follow and how you actually instruct the activity.– Course instructor Jim, in part two
