When Claire van Beek is writing a screenplay, she knows it’s ready when she can lie on her back with closed eyes, and watch the film in her mind. With a background in acting, playwriting and writing prose, van Beek’s focus is now on the screen. As a writer/director she has learnt much from her time working on set as an acting coach, chaperone and director’s assistant — including assisting Jane Campion on Power of the Dog (2021). In this ScreenTalk interview, van Beek discusses the making of her strange and sensual short film Daniel (2020), her interest in exploring the female psyche, and the "special and curious" sensation of seeing a film you were too young for as a child.

The nuance and detail and perhaps difficulty of the female psyche ... those are absolutely themes that I'm interested in exploring more.– Claire van Beek
