Dave Cull was born in Invercargill. After finishing a degree in Political Studies at Otago University, he spent time as a furniture maker and carpenter in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. When he returned downunder in 1983, he was asked to co-present TV show The Renovators. Further home improvement shows followed, including Open Home and Home Front. Cull wrote books on everything from painting techniques to icebergs and Otago wine. In 2010 he took on another new role, with the first of three terms as Mayor of Dunedin. Dave Cull died of pancreatic cancer in April 2021. He was 71.
