Fran Carney

Production Manager, Producer [Te Ātihaunui a Pāpārangi]

Hawke's Bay-born Fran Carney (Te Ātihaunui a Pāpārangi) graduated from the New Zealand Film and Television School in 1998. Since then she has done everything from producing to animal wrangling. During a five year stint at the NZ Film Commission, she was involved in talent development and establishing the commission's Te Rautaki Māori (Māori strategy). As of 2025, she is doing a Masters in Māori and Indigenous Leadership, and producing animated web series Bloke of the Apocalypse. Keen to support underrepresented voices, Carney produced 2021 short film Song for Serbia for Bulgarian-born director Rouzie Hassanova.

From an early age, I wanted to be an actor and go to Hollywood. Then I realised I wasn't very good at acting, so I decided to make my own stuff instead. After 20 years in the game, I'm here to stay! Fran Carney
