John Davies made business training videos for many years, before moving into film distribution and producing films. In 2003 Davies formed Arkles Entertainment, releasing Kiwi films including Kombi Nation, Spooked and Trouble is My Business. He self-funded and produced award-winning coming of age tale The Map Reader in 2008, which was invited to 20+ festivals. He also co-produced documentary Let's Talk About Sex (2018) and was on the producing team of The Last Magic Show (2008). Davies bought Academy Cinemas in 2005, an independent arthouse theatre in Auckland, and has also run the Victoria Cinema in Devonport.
