Whakatane raised Robin Kingsley-Smith had a long career spanning many types of media. The journalist was a reporter on regional news show Top Half, then joined the TVNZ newsroom and worked on TV One's primetime news bulletin. Later he spent time overseas, working at The Japan Times and in London, where he joined high profile breakfast television company TV-am. After returning to Aotearoa, he launched Asia Downunder (originally named Asia Dynamic), with business partner Melissa Lee. Aimed at New Zealand's Asian community, the magazine-style ran for 18 years. Kingsley-Smith died on 23 December 2021.
