The work of writer Martin Edmond rarely slots into easy geographical or stylistic boxes. After making his screen debut as co-writer of Illustrious Energy — an evocative portrait of Chinese gold prospectors in Central Otago — Edmond has gone on to explore tales of outsiders in another three feature films, and a number of books.

Roseanne Liang

Chinese-Kiwi Roseanne Liang first made a splash with 2005 documentary Banana in a Nutshell, based on her own romance with a European Kiwi. Later she turned her experiences into acclaimed big screen rom-com My Wedding and Other Secrets. After making five seasons of web series Flat3/Friday Night Bites, Liang was confirmed to direct a feature-length version of her high profile action short, Do No Harm. 

Gary Young

Actor

Since training in the 1990s at drama school Toi Whakaari and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in London, Gary Young has had many screen roles — including short film Chinese Whispers, and recurring parts on cop show Harry and the Kiwi version of Underbelly. In 2013 he wrote, directed, and starred in short film Ron and Alice. After acting in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel Sword of Destiny, Young joined the cast of Australian political thriller Secret City. In 2017 he landed a role on international hit Outlander, as a learned Chinese traveller who befriends lead character Jamie Fraser.

Geeling Ng

Actor

Model Geeling Ng found fame after a memorable beach scene with David Bowie in the video for 'China Girl'. Auckland born, of Chinese ancestry, Ng went on to act in 'glitter soap' Gloss and Chinese settlers down under classic Illustrious Energy (1987). Her recent screen appearances include playing boss on The Jaquie Brown Diaries, competing on Dancing with the Stars, and hosting a cooking segment on Asia Down Under.

Kevin Smith

Actor

Kevin Smith was the multi-talented actor who appeared in a host of television shows, starting with eighties soap Gloss.  He also starred in three tele-movies as maverick private investigator John Lawless. His feature films include period melodrama Desperate Remedies, and offbeat drama Channelling Baby.

Victoria Spackman

Executive

In May 2017 Victoria Spackman began as leader of creative campus Te Auaha, which is set to open in Wellington in 2018. Before that she was chief executive and co-owner of Wellington company Gibson Group, whose multi-media and interactive installations and TV programmes reach a large international audience. Studies in law, film, theatre and linguistics have all fed into Spackman's work. 

John McKay

Sound

John McKay is a veteran sound editor, sound designer, and mixer. He abandoned an early focus on directing to build a diverse, respected career in post-production. His credits include significant contributions to iconic films The Quiet Earth, Footrot FlatsKitchen Sink, and Lord of the Rings. McKay is notable for an approach which combines creativity with a high level of technical craft and organisational rigour.   

Leon Narbey

Cinematographer

Leon Narbey is one of New Zealand’s most prolific and lauded cinematographers. His talents have contributed to roughly 20 features, including Whale Rider, Desperate Remedies, The Price of Milk and No.2. Narbey's work as a director includes movies The Footstep Man and Illustrious Energy, an acclaimed drama about Chinese goldminers.

Elizabeth Mitchell

Producer

Elizabeth Mitchell made her name as creator and producer of animated hit bro'Town, which screened for five seasons and won multiple awards. Since then she has produced short films and directed documentaries, and is currently developing a feature based on Oscar Kightley's award-winning short Tom's Dairy.

Shane Loader

Director, Editor, Cinematographer, Writer

Shane Loader has credits as editor, cameraman, producer, and writer/director (including Clermont-Ferrand selected short The Terrorist). Since 2008, alongside partner Andrea Bosshard, he has begun making and distributing feature films through filmmaking initiative Torchlight Films. The pair's third feature The Great Maiden's Blush won acclaim when it was released in 2016.
