In 1983 director Geoff Murphy stormed out of the scrub of the newly-reborn NZ film industry with Utu: a quadruple-barreled shotgun take on the great colonial epic. The tale of Māori leader Te Wheke, on a bloody path to redress 'imbalance', became the first NZ film officially selected for Cannes and bowled legendary New Yorker critic Pauline Kael over.
