Utu

In 1983 director Geoff Murphy stormed out of the scrub of the newly-reborn NZ film industry with Utu: a quadruple-barreled shotgun take on the great colonial epic. The tale of Māori leader Te Wheke, on a bloody path to redress 'imbalance', became the first NZ film officially selected for Cannes and bowled legendary New Yorker critic Pauline Kael over. Check out excerpts from the beloved “puha western” and Gaylene Preston’s ‘making of’ documentary in this Spotlight collection about the classic film.
