How to Look at a Painting

Television, 2011

Art curator Justin Paton's guide How to Look at a Painting won a New Zealand Book Award in 2006. In this 12-part television series of the same name, Paton visits galleries and painters' studios on his "mission to show why painting matters". Two years in the making, the show debuted on TVNZ 7. Paton was praised for his enthusiastic, accessible approach. The series also preserves a city: Christchurch, where Paton then lived and worked, features prominently. How to Look at a Painting debuted 10 days after the February 2011 quakes.
