In this five-part series, actor, writer and presenter Elizabeth Easther travels around the Hauraki Gulf, meeting some of the people who live on its many islands. The show harks back to one of New Zealand's earliest travel shows: the original 1964 version of Islands of the Gulf made and hosted by Easther's mother — pioneering woman broadcaster Shirley Maddock. Top Shelf Productions' 2018 reboot places images from the earlier show alongside footage of the same locales, half a century later — demonstrating what has changed, and what hasn't. A revised version of Maddock's beloved Islands of the Gulf book accompanied the new series.
