The health (or otherwise) of the NZ music recording industry is the focus of this Kaleidoscope episode. Reporter Heath Lees visits record stores where the vast bulk of records sold are from international artists. He speaks with independent Kiwi label owners, like Victor Stent from Festival Records and Simon Grigg from Propeller Records, about the steep uphill climb facing companies promoting Kiwi musicians in the 1980s. Brendan Smyth from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council advocates strongly for a national recording commission to promote Kiwi artists overseas, while musician Jordan Luck slams FM radio stations who barely play local music.
Simply as far as I'm concerned, not enough. It would be a very small percent — it would rate at around, one, perhaps two percent.– EMI Retail Manager Graham Wong on the amount of Kiwi-made records selling in the early 1980s
