Marei grew up surrounded by music as the granddaughter of singer Whirimako Black and daughter of singer Ngatapa Black. She began her music journey with Māori music mentorship programme PAO Movement before releasing her debut single 'Rock Steady' in 2022, later adapted to te reo Māori as 'Tau ā-nuku' for the Waiata Anthems series. She featured on 'Te Ōhākī - Kei Hea Taku Reo' with Whirimako Black and Kings, and released singles 'Tahi Ka Riri' for Waiata Anthems, and 'Nanakia' featuring her smooth, soulful vocals and te reo Māori influences. Beyond music, Mārei is a works as a content creator for Whakaata Māori.
