Sidewalk Karaoke

Television, 2016–2018

Avoiding the bells and big notes of talent franchises like X Factor and ...Got Talent, Sidewalk Karaoke shifted the stage to Aotearoa’s streets and night markets. Passing punters hit the mic to see if they could make it through three karaoke rounds to win $1000. The Māori Television series replaced long-running studio show Homai Te Pakipaki, and was hosted by Te Hamua Nikora and Luke Bird. Created by Bailey Mackey (The GC) and Jonathon Urlich, the format was sold to global company FremantleMedia. Spinoff writer Madeleine Chapman was enthusiastic: "Sidewalk Karaoke is so simple it’s genius."
