This special 1984 episode of long-running te reo news show Te Karere looks at Waitangi Day. Derek Fox, who founded Te Karere, is the reporter. Fox follows the journey north of a train hired by members of the Tainui tribe to take their people to Waitangi. Topics of protest aired include land rights, the Waikato River and the Māori language. Among those appearing are a number of leaders who later passed on, including Sir Hepi Te Heuheu (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), Sir Robert Mahuta and Pumi Taituha (both Tainui), Sir James Henare (Ngāpuhi), and Sir Kingi Ihaka (Te Aupōuri).
