Constructed as an elaborate mystery, this miniseries charts the unpredictable fortunes of two immigrants who arrive in the South Island during the 1860s gold rush. One of them, Anna (Irish actor Eve Hewson), finds herself under the wing of the mysterious Lydia Wells, who runs The House of Many Wishes. Eleanor Catton based her six-part script on the 832-page novel which won her the Man Booker Prize. Directed by Australian Claire McCarthy (2018 movie Ophelia), the Anglo-Kiwi miniseries was nominated for 14 NZ TV Awards. It won eight, including for script, direction, cinematography and the design team — plus British actor Himesh Patel.
