Till I Die

The Screaming Meemees , Music Video – 1982

from the EP Seemeego-o (1981)

Teenage North Shore band The Screaming Meemees were already creating a buzz before mainstream radio was rocked when their song 'See Me Go' entered the charts at number one. 'Till I Die' featured on the B-side of the hit single. Layered, colour saturated performance shots are cut on the beat to highlight the post-punk, jerky rhythm of the song, and a Union Jack and British military-style coats mirror the song's marching band drumbeat and early New Wave aesthetic. According to Propeller Records founder Simon Grigg the lyrics were drawn from Catholic hymns, a nod to their Rosmini College days.

We were so earnestly serious about the music. It was everything, our weekly buzz, our social life, and very quickly we made a conscious decision, as 16-year-olds who knew everything, to be a real band. We were all chin out, chest out, like we knew exactly what we’re doing when we didn’t have any idea at all.
– Guitarist Michael O'Neill on his teenage band The Screaming Meemees, AudioCulture, 2 Jul 2014
