In this fifth episode from his personal examination of New Zealand at the end of the 70s, Ian Johnstone explores the new suburb of Massey in West Auckland — the latest instalment in what seemed, at the time, like an unending march of urban sprawl (and which had already produced seemingly far-flung suburbs like Otara and Porirua). For Johnstone, Massey is as an "infestation of houses" bafflingly devoid of community amenities. By turns wry, considered and accusatory, this masterful performance would have made him few friends in town planning circles.

I agree with Dave. As a former Massey resident, I'm fairly disturbed to hear my own opinions expressed 40 years ago, before it was even built up, and before the daily traffic jams along Triangle and Don Buck Road.
More of this, please. We don't seem to have these same quality documentaries about the places we live and work anymore.
Great stuff - thank you NZ On Screen.
This was utterly fascinating. How fortunate are we that stuff like this was getting made about New Zealand in the 1970's! And is now available to us in digital format over 40 years later! Super cool.
I would love to watch more episodes from this series - it looks like only the fifth episode is available for now? http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/johnstones-journey-1978/series
Thank you to the team behind Johnstone's Journey, and NZ On Screen for making this video available.

What an intelligent insightful doco. Just shows how dumbed down our media is now.
