Gussie Larkin, songwriter and guitarist in Wellington band The Mermaidens describes the song Soft Energy as "a response to interactions with people who put on a tough and detached exterior that, I can see, isn’t doing them any good". Mermaidens is made up of Larkin, guitarist and co-vocalist Lily West and drummer Abe Hollingsworth. Larkin stepped in as video director with visions of a "pink, fur covered room" and maybe a "foam pit". Clad in pink pantsuits, clasping candles or channelling ABBA, Larkin and West project oceans of 'soft energy' as the band frolic around a bespoke clam shell.
Sweat on your neck drips down my spine, all of our blood moves in time...– Lyrics from the chorus for Soft Energy by The Mermaidens
