Taking the Waewae Express

Film (Full Length) – 2008

M
Mature

In this full-length feature, relationships between friends and family members are reformed in the aftermath of a car crash that takes the life of the beloved son of a school principal (Rangimoana Taylor). The first semi-improvised low budget feature co-directed by Andrea Bosshard and Shane Loader was shot in and around the Wellington seaside suburb of Island Bay. Hayden (Evan Hussey), the driver of the car, must live with his guilt; but amongst all the pain new relationships bloom, especially for cousin Awhi (Tamati Pere). Oldest son Wiremu is played by Modern Māori Quartet singer Matariki Whatarau (Why Does Love?).

I've driven drunk before, stoned, too fast. Spun out heaps, eh.
– Wiremu (Matariki Whatarau) reflects on his luck with mate Phil (Issac Heron)
