The late Bill Toft moved from radio into television in the 60s, joining a roster of newsreaders who took turns presenting the main Wellington news bulletin. After a nationwide news show was finally launched in late 1969, Toft became one of the anchors. A newsreader from the days of BBC-style elocution, Toft later inspired the Bill Toft Memorial Fund prize for broadcasting.
