Don Scott

Camera

Australian-born cameraman Don Scott captured many memorable New Zealand news stories, including the Rainbow Warrior bombing, the Erebus disaster, and a number of royal visits. Scott shot news, sports, and current affairs for the NZ Broadcasting Corporation, and later TVNZ and TV3. He was also part of the original crew on te reo news show Te Karere, where he advocated to get more Māori and Pacific Island students behind the camera. In the 1960s he co-founded the short-lived NZ Society of Cinematographers. After a long career in Kiwi television, Scott retired to Australia; he passed away in New South Wales on 30 April 2023.

He was a champion of encouraging Māori and Pacific Islander students to get behind the camera and have more key roles behind the scenes at a time when it was very difficult for anyone to get a start in film and television.
