Detroit-raised Doug Dillaman likes moving pictures so much that when he's not cutting images, he's often writing about film. In 2004 Dillaman headed downunder to study editing, then began cutting a long list of Kiwi screen projects. Much of it was non-fiction ( Let's Get Inventin', NZ Idol), but he also edited on Maddigan’s Quest and Agent Anna. After joining a filmmaking collective, Dillaman worked with many of them on his directorial debut: identity-switching movie Jake (2014). He followed it with the unclassifiable Gut Instinct. Stuff reviewer James Croot called it "a mix of fabulous world-building, arresting visuals and black humour".
Constantly surprising and often very funny, Gut Instinct is a genuine big screen, audience-pleasing experience and destined to be a cult classic. Dan Slevin reviews Gut Instinct on Radio New Zealand, 22 August 2025
