John Knowles has held many leadership roles in broadcasting, and worked around the world. Ask Knowles to name his highlight and he’s very clear — being TVNZ's Head of Sport at precisely the right time. In 1979 he was one of the only television reporters to visit Antarctica, to report on the Mount Erebus disaster.

Biography

John Knowles has been television manager of three out of four of the former state broadcaster’s stations, and was involved in setting up some major live events in the late 1980s and 1990s. In a career full of highs — and some lows — being Head of Sport at TVNZ was, he says, simply the best job.

“My philosophy was to leave driving the product on air to producers — this is your job, you do it, through me. But they’re the guys who are doing the job, don’t go and do it for them. And as a result we had some wonderfully inventive producers.”
